The animal welfare organization "Hydra Ark" has introduced and executed an excellent initiative. Today, outside the football field, soil was put down and a large number of aromatic herbs (rosemary) were planted. The area was cleaned and the plants were watered. The cleanup and landscaping should be completed in a few days with the placement of three more large plants.
Behind the big plants, HydraArk will place a special structure to provide the cats with water, food, and shelter. The cost was covered exclusively by an "Hydra Ark" donor who wishes to remain anonymous.
Many thanks to HydraArk’s volunteers and to Mr. Grigoris Kotromagias and the Municipality of Hydra for providing a truck to transfer the plants and the soil.
HydraArk would be grateful if citizens would keep the area clean and, in that effort, give cats only dry food and not leftover food that would otherwise be thrown away.
Also, please do not leave unwanted kittens in the area. Abandoning animals is a crime punishable by law. HydraArk has established neutering programmes to avoid this phenomenon and control the overpopulation of cats. These programs prevent the birth of hundreds of stray animals.
Congratulations to Hydra Ark, its president Argyris Kalamatianaki, and its members. This voluntary and exemplary effort is an example for our community. We can all work together to make our public spaces attractive and keep them spotless.
